Payment calculators on expensive homes can produce a number that's hard to relate to. 'This home needs about $X a year in household income' is clearer, and it filters casual browsers from realistic buyers.
Buyers often look at a home and wonder 'could we even afford this?' This income needed for a mortgage calculator answers that directly. From the loan amount, rate, taxes, insurance and other debts, it works out the annual and monthly income needed at a chosen DTI limit. On higher-priced listings and relocation pages it's often more useful than a payment, because buyers compare it with their salary.
Enough that the total housing payment plus other debts stays under the lender's debt-to-income limit. The calculator takes a loan amount, rate, taxes, insurance and other debts, and solves for the gross income where DTI equals the limit you set. It's a planning estimate. Lenders apply their own rules.

A high DTI limit makes the required income look low and may set unrealistic expectations. Keep the default conservative and explain it.
HOA dues count toward housing costs. On condos and planned communities, add them to taxes or insurance, or the income figure will be too low.
Avoid 'income required to qualify' language that sounds like a lender's rule. 'Estimated income needed' is accurate.
